Restore Student Grants
UKIP County Durham is deeply concerned at the massive amount of student debt, estimated at £5 billion
in 2010. We believe that those who really should be at university should be supported
financially by the state according to their need through to the completion of their
bachelor’s degree. |

The onward march of the Federal StateThe EU continues to take ever more steps towards the completion of its ultimate objective: the creation of a United States of Europe. The crisis in the Euro zone has at least caused federalists to admit the fact. European “President”, Herman Van Rompuy has announced his intention to run for a second term as EU President at the head of a “United States of Europe” (his words). Meanwhile, the former German Chancellor, Gerhard Shroeder, has admitted to Der Spiegel magazine that the creation of a euro zone economic government would “translate into a United States of Europe”. But still those in favour of our membership of the EU cling to the belief that it is all about trade. Or perhaps they don’t; perhaps they continue to obfuscate in the hope that we’ll all agree to walk blindly into the USE. The move towards a common legal system continues, unannounced in the UK, but available on the EU Commission’s own web site for all to see and understand. Common Law is under threat as the EU Commission has adopted a policy paper aiming to ensure that 700,000 legal practitioners undertake training in EU law by 2020. The Commission previously set goals increasing the number of judges and prosecutors trained in European law with the aim of empowering them to apply European law at national levels. This is further evidence of additional attempts to give EU law supremacy over British law in all areas of our lives. The region’s own metric martyrs were victims of EU law taking precedence over laws enacted at Westminster. The Commission has recently published a blue print for EU policy on Criminal Law. The Treaty of Lisbon, signed by Gordon Brown and accepted by David Cameron (what happened to the promised referendum?), takes huge steps in this direction. The Treaty and this blue print give powers to the EU to use criminal law in order to enforce its policies and rules. It grants powers to define common definitions of what is deemed to be a crime. Now that means that we would have to re-define, for example, xenophobia as a crime. In the UK we currently have no such crime although a number of European Countries do consider it so. Criminal Law will be used to prevent and punish offences against EU Law and Rules in some policy areas. And the Europhiles tell us the EU is about trade. Nigel Coghill-Marshall. Britannia
Arise, advance, Britannia
Lift up your shield. Oh Queen of seas
March ever on, Britannia
Lead us on, Britannia
To battle then, Britannia
To Victory, Britannia (Bruce Reid. UKIP Co. Durham) |
County Durham has a long and proud history. A history which can be traced back over 1000 years and has been at the forefront of the achievements of our great nation.
With a coastline stretching from the Tyne to the Tees, the county has always been outward looking and welcoming, outward looking in trade, but also in its art and culture and intellectual ideals.
However the increasing powers of the European Union are not only having an effect on our Westminster Democracy, it is having a direct effect on our residence and the way we live our lives in County Durham.
Our traders are prosecuted for selling goods by the pound, our jobs are being exported to other EU nations while cheap labour is imported for those yet to make the switch. Our post-offices are closing due to EU competition rules, council taxes are increasing due to EU imposed land fill taxes. More recently our local system of democracy has been destroyed by the abolition of our district councils as we are further integrated into the EU Super State.
UKIP County Durham has been formed to highlight how the EU powers extend to our daily lives in Bishop Auckland, Consett, Chester-le-Street and Durham.
We fielded candidates in the 2010 General Election and aim to field candidates for the local authority elections in 2012.
